Renée Monrose is a New York City artist and photographer whose interests include portraiture, gender, race, politics, mythology and Biblical interpretation. Her most recent work focusses on women, feminism and gender. She has had exhibits in New York, Paris, San Francisco, Chicago and New Orleans. Ongoing projects include Tomboys: Portraits Then And Now, Girls Will Be Girls, an exploration of women and violence in popular culture, and Tiny Hands.
Since 2012, Renée has volunteered as rape crisis advocate at Bellevue Hospital. She is the blog editor for Project Envision, a NYC–funded organization whose mission is to change social attitudes that lead to sexual violence.
In the past Renée worked as an archivist for documentary films at PBS Frontline and American Masters and as a director of development for special projects at Merchant-Ivory Films. In 2006, her interest in theology led her to enroll at Union Theological Seminary where she earned an M.Div in Psychology and Religion and Biblical Studies.
In 2016, Renée attended the Human Dignity and Humiliation Studies Conference at Columbia University and was invited to join the HDHS Global Education Team in 2017.
She was born and grew up in New Orleans.
